In this book, Ilan Pappé examines how Zionism has operated within the government, military, education system, media, and cinema, as well as how the Holocaust has been weaponized to reinforce the ideological foundation of the Israeli state. He meticulously deconstructs Zionist narratives, providing documented evidence to expose their falsehoods and revealing the systematic creation of the myth of independence and the so-called Israeli society. The author also offers a compelling historical account of how academic circles played a role in this exposure. He highlights that, until the 1990s, no one from within Israel dared to question the foundational narratives of its establishment. However, this period marked the emergence of critical academic scrutiny, leading to the rise of the New Historians or Post-Zionists, a movement to which Pappé himself belongs. His research and revelations about the treatment of Palestinians and the disturbing relationship between knowledge production and power structures within the occupying entity led to severe backlash, including death threats. Given the ongoing crimes against the Palestinian people at the hands of the last colonial stronghold in the Middle East, this book becomes essential for generations deprived of the truth due to manipulated education and misleading media. Pappé details how Zionist militias exploited historical timing, engaging in a complex sequence of killing, looting, and settlement, before playing the role of the victim—an opportunistic maneuver to extract legitimacy amid the widespread anti-Semitism in post-Holocaust Europe. This is the core idea behind the book's title, and Pappé presents it backed by rigorous questioning and debate about its logic, legitimacy, and sustainability in the face of justice and truth. Ilan Pappé is a prominent Israeli historian and socialist activist whose extensive works have made him one of the most outspoken critics of Zionist crimes. His revelations even led to his suspension by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The Possessed: A Study of Spirits and Possession in Upper Egypt The Possessed: A Study of Spirits and Possession is a book written by the young German anthropologist Hans Winkler in the 1930s. It was translated into English by the American University in Cairo a few years ago, and now, for the first time, we present it in Arabic. This book sheds light on an important aspect of life in a small village in Qena, Upper Egypt—specifically, Nag' El-Higiri in the city of Fuqu. During his time in the village, the young researcher dedicated himself to studying the phenomenon of spirit possession, exploring cases of jinn possession, exorcisms, and the role of spiritual healers (sheikhs) who mediate between spirits and the afflicted. The book is filled with fascinating stories, extraordinary characters, and paradoxes that defy logic. Through his in-depth study of the case of Abd El-Radi, Winkler expands his research to examine the broader anthropological dimensions of the phenomenon—an approach that was far ahead of its time. His study provides a cultural and social perspective on the beliefs surrounding spirit possession in Upper Egypt. Even today, the belief in spirits and possession continues to capture the imagination of many across the Arab world. But what are its historical and religious origins? What are the anthropological, scientific, and psychological explanations for this phenomenon? The people of Nag' El-Higiri still remember Abd El-Radi, and many others like him exist in Qena and throughout the region. This study offers an insightful look into this age-old belief system, and it is only fitting that we finally have access to it in Arabic. Praise for the book: "One of those books that captivates the reader from the very first lines, making it impossible to put down until the very last page. It’s the kind of book you return to time and again, never tiring of rereading it."

Manhood Is No Easy The Meaning of Masculinity in Egypt – Reflections on the Life of Sayed Hankash What does a modern man understand by the term "manhood"? What do women, children, family, neighbors, and friends expect from him? Does masculinity come with conditions, privileges, and responsibilities? And most importantly does it have a fixed definition? If it does, is it unchanging or evolving? And if it evolves, what determines its standards? Imagine two men meeting—one from the 1920s and the other from the 2020s how would each perceive the other’s sense of masculinity? Is masculinity about flexibility or rigidity? Or is it both? This book does not claim to provide definitive answers to these complex questions. Instead, it offers an engaging scientific study by a Dutch anthropologist, exploring the concept of masculinity in Egypt through an in-depth analysis of the Egyptian male mindset. The study revolves around Sayed Hankash, a working-class Egyptian man living and working in the famous Mohamed Ali Street in downtown Cairo. However, this book is not a biography of Sayed Hankash or his family. Rather, the researcher delves into his thoughts, worldview, and philosophy on gender, masculinity, and femininity in Egypt. Readers will be intrigued by the many surprising insights and real-life observations documented throughout this academic research—insights that reflect everyday realities in contemporary Egyptian society. A fascinating book about Egypt and Egyptians, offering a unique glimpse into the life of one of Cairo’s historic streets. Originally published in English by the American University in Cairo Press.
