The first in a series of three books documenting the World Heritage Sites of UNESCO. This fully illustrated volume presents a selection of one hundred sites of cultural and architectural value that have been continuously inhabited but some of which are threatened by modernization. Among these, UNESCO has placed on its list of sites a considerable number of historic city centers (such as Cairo, Venice, and Avignon), places of worship (such as the Vatican City and Meidan Imam in Isfahan, Iran), and individual buildings of particular importance (such as the Taj Mahal in Agra and the palace of Versailles). Also included are places that have been important to industrial progress in recent history, such as the Iron Bridge Gorge in Great Britain and the steelworks in the Saar in Germany. Marco Cattaneo is a professional journalist and the author of the book Heisenberg and the Quantum Revolution (2000). An enthusiastic traveler and photographer, he has written for the Italian magazine Airone and currently works for Meridiani. Jasmin Trifoni is journalist in the field of tourism and is a member of the editorial staff of Meridiani as well as writing for a number of Italian publications
